My final weight isn’t the ultimate determining factor of my success, as I will be adding muscle in place of fat. However, I will be shooting for losing around 25-30 pounds of fat. The ultimate goal and indicator of success for me is to lose my gut and drop my waist size to around 32 inches, which is about normal for my height/build.

My plan is to “diet” until I reach my target weight, then transition to a more sustainable, maintainable lifestyle. However, my idea of a diet isn’t Atkins, or South Beach, or Weight Watchers. It’s simply to take in fewer calories than I expend each day, while keeping a healthy balance of protein, fats, and carbs. During the “diet” phase, I will be extra careful about what I eat. Low calorie (and low sugar, low fat, low carb) is the name of the game.

I don’t know how long the diet phase will last. I’m thinking it will take 9-12 weeks. That’s just a guess based on losing 2-3 pounds a week (which is considered a healthy goal). If I am hardcore about it, that time could drop by a few weeks. We’ll see!

The first day of a diet/exercise program is one of the hardest. It marks the beginning of a long and arduous journey that will require lots of dedication and real effort. And there will be pain… Physical pain and emotional pain. I’ll have to push through muscle soreness, lack of motivation, and faltering dedication in order to achieve my goal. But I know it’s worth it.

D-day also marks a transition point– a permanent change in lifestyle. Changing habits and behavior is one of the most difficult things a person can do. So I try not to look at this process in a negative light. I’m not taking away, I’m adding positive changes to my style of living.

For me to get back on the fitness wagon, I had to make a conscious decision to do it. I wanted to get fit more than I wanted to be fat… I want to be healthy and look great more than I want convenience and “easy mode”.

Being a hardcore procrastinator, I’ve put off this day for months. I decided to do this weeks ago. But finally, I just did it. One day I just said, “Ok, it’s time.” and hopped in the car and headed to the gym. I summoned the will and desire to begin the physical (and mental) transformation.

Thought of the day: “Just do it.”

Hi, my name is… Well, names aren’t that important here. Anyways, my story is that I recently turned 30 years old and am heavier than I’ve ever been. Nothing remarkable, really, I could be any guy in any town in the US. I have a very sedentary lifestyle and it’s been several years since I’ve done any exercise worth mentioning.

What makes me different and what makes me think you’ll want to come along with me on this journey? I recently made the very tough decision to do whatever it takes to drop the extra weight and get fit. I plan on succeeding, and hopefully I can inspire a few of you to pick up the gauntlet and get fit to lose as well.

This is my journey.
